I joined the Hackers and Drinkers Golf League back in 2001. My boss at the time told me
about a league that played 9 holes every week at Chastain in a semi-competitive, social
atmosphere. So we joined, and played about 3 years there, before the league disolved.
In 2006 I took the league over. I decided to move it to an executive course, so that we
could play 18 holes per week, but in a shorter amount of time than a full round of par
72 golf. I chose Blue Heron golf club in Sandy Springs because of the lower green fees.
I brought around 5 remaining members of the old league, and sent an email around the
office looking for new members, and there was a large interest, so the new Hackers and
Drinkers Golf League was formed.
The league currently starts in late May, and lasts for 10 weeks. We play on Thursday
afternoons with the first tee times at 4:30pm. Each week we play a variety of league
games such as:
- Straight Golf - Each team plays their own ball throughout the round, and the team's
score is the total of each team members score.
- Redman - Each male member of the team is allowed to play 2 holes per side from the
red tee boxes of his choosing. Each female member is allowed 2 mulligans per side
off the tee box.
- Best Ball - Lowest score per hole on each team, is added up for the teams total
score for the round.
- Scramble - Each team selects the best shot on the team, and everyone plays from
that spot on the hole, until someone holes out.
- Crazy Scramble - Same as above but each team is allowed a limited number of "kicks"
and "throws" that do not count as strokes.
- Modified 5 Club - Each team member gets bonus strokes subtracted from his score
based on using the least amount of clubs throughout the round. Such as 20 strokes
off his score for using only 1 club the entire round.
- Pink Ball - Each team member alternates using a pink ball on a hole. Teams are
rewarded for bringing back pink balls at the end of the round, or penalized for
losing their pink balls.
There are weekly prizes for closest to the pin holes. We have a league ending scramble
at the end of the season for trophies. We also award trophies to members who have lead
the league in birdies and pars throughout the season.
Membership is open to anyone, but we cannot have more than 20 full time members due to
time constraints. If you are interested in joining please send an email to smoore at
scottmoore.net.
